Ellis has secured a second major order for its Emperor cable cleats and ProTect cable straps to be installed in the Areva European Pressurised Reactor (EPR) nuclear power plant currently being constructed in the Guangdong province of China. The order was placed at the commencement of the second phase of the Taishan Nuclear Power Project, which is a joint venture between EDF and China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group. Ellis expects to ship the product from its North Yorkshire headquarters in the final quarter of the year. Tony Conroy, Ellis’ export sales director, said: “Even after the success of the phase one specification, receiving a repeat order for phase two was far from simple. “A huge emphasis has been placed on the various contractors to source local products, and so it felt like a huge victory to overturn this directive and once again see British products being specified for installation in a major Chinese development.” Designed for use where the highest levels of short circuit withstand are required, Ellis’ Emperor cable cleats are available for both trefoil and single cable applications. All products in the range are manufactured in type 316L stainless steel, meaning they provide ultimate corrosion protection, even in the harshest of environments. The benefits of the Emperor cleats also extend to a patented design, which makes installation quick and easy, and an integral LSF zero halogen polymeric liner and base pad that protects and cushions cables during short circuit conditions. Ellis’ ProTect cable straps, which are also manufactured out of 316L stainless steel, are designed for installation between trefoil cleats, such as Emperors. They not only enhance short circuit capabilities, but help to retain trefoil formation and, because they allow for greater fixing distances between cleats, can reduce installation time and cost. The Taishan reactor is the third nuclear power station to be built using Areva’s 1,750 megawatt EPR and it is the second time Areva has used Ellis’ products to secure electrical cables at a nuclear plant. The very first specification from Areva was for its OL3 reactor in Finland in 2009, and was followed in 2013 by the first phase order for the Taishan prohject.
