At Ellis, we understand the critical importance of cable cleats in ensuring the safety and reliability of electrical installations. Cable cleats play a crucial role in securing and supporting cables, preventing dangerous cable movement and potential damage during short circuits or other electrical faults. Our dedication to technical excellence drives us to not only adhere to the IEC 61914 requirements and subject all our cable cleats to a rigorous testing regime but to oversee and offer guidance on all aspects of cleat specifications, taking into consideration the many varied installation environmental pressures that cleats may be subjected to throughout their lifetime.
Cable cleats are fundamental components in electrical installations, particularly in environments where cables are subjected to mechanical stress, such as industrial facilities, power plants, and transportation infrastructure. Without proper cable cleating, cables can experience dangerous levels of movement during short circuits or overload conditions, leading to the risk of electrical faults, equipment damage, and even personnel injury.
History
Arthur Ellis epitomised what today would be termed entrepreneurial spirit.
In 1962 he recognised plastic was the material of the future and Ellis Patents was born. Before retiring in 1987, Mr Ellis sold the business to its current shareholders and secured its long-term future.
At Ellis, we recognise the importance of adhering to international standards to ensure the reliability and performance of our cable cleats. Our products comply with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 61914 standard, which specifies requirements and tests for cable cleats used for electrical installations.
One of the key factors in the design and manufacture of cable cleats is mechanical strength. Cable cleats must withstand the forces generated during short circuit conditions to prevent cable movement and maintain system integrity. At Ellis, we conduct rigorous short-circuit testing on our cable cleats to verify their mechanical strength and performance under extreme conditions. This testing ensures that our products meet or exceed industry standards for reliability and safety.
Warning: The strength of a cable cleat is often determined using a mechanical tensile test. However, the results may be misleading because the force is applied in a slow and controlled manner, which does not replicate fault conditions. Experience shows cleats tested only using mechanical tensile testing will not necessarily survive a short-circuit test, even if the forces are the same.
Proper cleat spacing is essential to ensure effective cable restraint and support. Incorrect spacing can lead to inadequate cable support or excessive stress on cables, increasing the risk of damage or failure. Our team of experts at Ellis employs advanced calculation methods to determine the optimal cleat spacing based on cable diameter, installation conditions, and regulatory requirements. We offer a wide range of cable cleats designed to accommodate various cable sizes and installation environments, allowing customers to select the right cleats for their specific applications.
One of the most important issues to consider when specifying cable cleats is the risk of material corrosion – not just as a result of the installation environment, but also from other metals which the cleat is in contact with.
Understanding the potential impact of corrosion in a given location and installation is very important. One way to ensure resistance to most corrosive situations is to ensure 316L Stainless Steel is specified for both cleats and fixings, another is through the use of coatings.
