As part of a £7.2 million multi-phase NHS electrical resilience programme, St Peter’s Hospital in the UK required a robust backup power solution to support its critical care departments, including the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), theatre block, A&E, and pathology.
Initial works began in late 2020 with the design and installation of UPS/IPS systems for the NICU, featuring a custom-built GRP and steel enclosure housing the UPS unit on the roof of the hospital’s five-storey building.
In 2022, Barton Knight Contracting returned to complete civil works on a new generator farm, laying a 500sqm concrete base and installing containment for future supplies. The third phase involved the supply and installation of two T1650 1500kVA diesel generators to deliver synchronised, load-sharing backup power for the hospital.
The complexity of the installation required extensive roof-mounted cable routing, use of over 2,000 metres of hot-dip galvanised ladder-racking (ranging from 300mm to 900mm), and the laying of parallel runs of large 4-Core LSF SWA cables to serve multiple hospital departments.
To ensure maximum safety and system resilience in the event of a fault, Barton Knight Contracting selected Ellis Vulcan+™ Quad cable cleats for the primary short circuit protection of these critical power cables.
The Vulcan+™ Quad range provided a proven, high-performance solution for managing large groups of heavy-duty SWA cables on the rooftop ladder racking - securing them effectively while allowing for thermal expansion and maintaining long-term mechanical integrity.
Working closely with supplier AF Switchgear, all generator panels were FAT tested before installation. The project was delivered with minimal disruption to hospital operations, with successful generator crane-ins completed in July and September 2023, and the electrical panels installed in early 2024.
The use of Ellis Vulcan+ Quad cleats plays a key role in maintaining the integrity of this life-saving infrastructure.
